Activity Analysis (3-4 pages, double spaced, MLA format)

For this assignment, you will be asked to analyze an Activity System that you engage in (Refer to the Kain and Wardle, and the Marro articles for help defining an Activity System).  Your focus will be on gathering data for a specific activity system to examine how the primary and minor genres of those systems mediate activity, create and reinforce particular identities and values, and create authority for particular individuals.  

What do you do?

-You’ll begin by choosing an activity system of importance to you (one you either belonged to, or still do) to focus on.  You’ll want to describe the activity in some way in your introduction—remember, the audience knows what an activity system is, but not what your activity is.

-Use an Activity Triangle (found in the pdf essay) to help sort out the Activity System’s parts.  You’ll want to include this with your paper. 

-Next, you’ll want to gather data on the Activity System; consider gathering some secondary research (quotes, etc.) that can help you define and show the Activity System’s ways of operating and conducting its activity.  You may also want to consider observing members of an Activity System in action to see how they work to complete the Objective, if possible. 

Data Analysis

Now, analyze the data you’ve collected.  Consider who is in the A.S., who helps create rules, divisions of labor, etc. What genres of communication are used?  How are goals achieved, and what motives/outcomes are expected of the Subjects?  Make sure you clearly define both what the Activity System does, and anything interesting you think you’ve uncovered in terms of how it works, or how human interaction plays a large part in completing the Objective of this particular Activity System.  Refer to the triangle when necessary to guide your analysis.  

What Makes it Good?

You’ll want to ensure that you collect and analyze data that allows you to learn something new and to be able to share that information with you audience.  Frame your claims and support them with this in mind:  What can you teach the reader about the Activity System?  What about your Activity System is unique, or how does your Activity System teach us about them in general?
